CEYPETCO bans sale of ‘Lanka Kerosene’

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CEYPETCO) today banned the distribution of the “ Lanka Kerosene Oil” (red color) to vehicles, factories, barrels and other wholesale distributions. The CEYPETCO said that, out of the two types of Kerosene- “Industrial Kerosene” and “Lanka Kerosene”, the latter is used by the fishing community and those with lower income households. Accordingly, by circular number 987, the CEYPETCO had directed all dealers to stop distributing Lanka Kerosene to factories and other wholesale outlets, after discovering that many dealers have been distributing Lanka Kerosene instead of Industrial Kerosene. The CEYPETCO said that it identified that dealers have been selling Lanka Kerosene instead of Industrial Kerosene in order to maximize profits as the former is given to dealers at a subsidized rate. The circular directed all distributors to ensure that the subsidized kerosene was solely given to low income families and the fishing community.

Battle for Mosul: Iraq PM Abadi formally declares victory

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has formally declared victory over so-called Islamic State (IS) in Mosul. Mr Abadi waved a national flag with troops after announcing the "collapse of the terrorist state of falsehood". Earlier, clashes were reported in a small part of Old City where a few dozen IS militants were holding out. PM asked to name a successor

The committee appointed to look into the reorganization of the United National Party (UNP) in its report had recommended that Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe should name a person who would take over the party leadership as and when he steps down from the leadership. A member of the committee said it had come out with this suggestion as its members were of the opinion that it would be easier for the party to move forward when a suitable person who would take over the party is named. Also, it was stated that many in the party had wanted to feel secured in the future. The committee had also recommended that Deputy Leader should be given more powers such as the authority to go around the country organizing party activities. It was also highlighted that vital decisions on the future of the party would be made on March 22.
